

SIO Ernakulam district committee conducted a table talk on the topic " Conversion of CUSAT to IIEST" on 7th february at Mezban hall near HMT junction.Badeeuzzamaan,member of the Solidarity youth movement state committee, introduced the topic and moderated the discussions.He urged the authorities to discuss the pros and cons of the proposal and rectify the issues raised by the academicians before implementing the proposal.He said that although we could observe the influence of neo liberal agenda in almost all of the developmental activities nowadays, we could not say that the existing systems are the best.He shared his concerns about the undemocratic tendencies in our universities and educational system.It calls for a change but the change should not be exercised according to the interests of the Market forces.We should stick to the basic values when implementing change.
Prof.Dr.K.Sreekumar of 'Save CUSAT Forum' said that the proposed move would sabotage the founding goals of the university.He also shared his fears about protecting the reservation system and denial of social justice,when CUSAT becomes a central government institution.
Prof.Zakkariya,former member of the CUSAT syndicate, was of the view that CUSAT should be converted to an IIEST while protecting the existing reservation system for admissions and appointments of teaching and non teaching staffs.He emphasised that the students community would be the ultimate beneficiaries if the university was converted to an IIEST.
Other speakers participating in the discussion were senate member Kunju moitheen kutty,Felix(latin catholic association),V.I Salim (JIH) and Shiyas (KSU).SIO District president anas presided over the function.Abdullah welcomed the gathering and Sadiq expressed vote of thanks.Members of the CUSAT students community,teaching and non teaching staff and public were present on the occasion.
